When couples start planning their wedding weekend, one question I hear a lot is: “Should we host a post-wedding brunch?” The idea sounds lovely since it’s an extra chance to see your guests, reminisce about the night before, and say proper goodbyes. But here’s the thing: as a DC wedding planner who’s seen it all, I can tell you that a post-wedding brunch isn’t always worth the time or expense. The key is knowing your guests (and your wedding vibe) well enough to decide if it’s the right fit. Here’s my honest take:
If you know your wedding is going to be a big party and you’ve got plenty of guests who love to celebrate late into the night…do yourself (and them) a favor: skip the brunch.
After a late night of dancing, cocktails, and after-parties, most guests won’t be eager to wake up early and put on real clothes the next morning. In this case, I recommend putting your budget and energy toward a welcome party instead. It’s a great way to kick off the weekend, greet your guests in a relaxed setting, and save that morning-after time for sleeping in, packing up, and soaking in the “we’re married!” glow.
On the flip side, if you know your crowd is on the lower-key side or if you’re hosting a destination wedding where guests have traveled in and might want more time together, then a post-wedding brunch can be a great idea.
I especially love when couples choose a scenic or locally loved spot for their brunch. In DC, that might mean a restaurant with a view of the monuments, a cozy spot in Georgetown, or even a charming hotel restaurant near where most guests are staying. Not only does it give everyone a chance to recap the night before, but it’s also a fun way to show off more of the city to your out-of-town guests.
At the end of the day, there’s no right or wrong answer. It’s about what fits your crowd (and your energy level). Think about this:
If it feels like a hassle, skip it. If it feels fun, go for it! Either way, your wedding weekend will still feel special and complete.
Whether it’s mapping out the perfect welcome party spot or coordinating your brunch plans, I love helping couples craft a wedding weekend that’s seamless and stress-free.
